ACTIVE RECOVERY BOSTON
Revolutionizing Soft Tissue Injury Treatment
The mission of Active Recovery Boston is to be your soft tissue injury experts. Soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves) is involved in all kinds of injuries. Headaches, back pain, tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, iliotibial band syndrome, shin splints, and plantar fascitis are just the tip of the soft tissue injury iceberg. Despite the vast prevalence of soft tissue problems, the healthcare system has not made them a priority. The reasons are many. No single profession specializes in soft tissue injuries. Diagnosis cannot be made by technology such as metabolic tests or labs. And, unfortunately, there are no soft tissue wonder drugs. All of this adds up to a generally poor understanding of these kinds of injuries. We are changing this for the better. We understand soft tissue and know how to diagnose soft tissue problems. We integrate pertinent information gathered in your history and exam to form a “story” about your injury instead of merely “labeling” it. For example, you have pain on the outside of your knee. Instead of simply saying, “You have iliotibial band syndrome,” we may say, “Your knee stabilizers are weak because you have a sciatic nerve entrapment. This weakness is causing your iliotibial band to work harder, producing pain.” The problem doesn’t begin at the iliotibial band. It ends there. If we only treat the end of the problem we won’t be fixing it. Our mission is to fix your injury from the source. Our goal is not only to treat your injury, but also educate you in the process. We want you to know why you became injured. We want you to understand your treatment process. And we want you to have all the knowledge necessary to prevent your injury from returning.

In all my misfortunes as a triathlete, Dr. Zubiel has been my luckiest find. My previous providers may have had a particular strength, but Abbie combines all the best qualities. She navigates the anatomy with ease, with a striking ability to spot trouble areas without input. Her warm-up procedures have made any required adjustments more effective and longer-lasting than anyone else I have seen. I owe the ability to continue training to the outstanding quality of her work.
I just wanted to write a quick thank you. I would not have been able to put in the training and effort last weekend without your help and everyone at ARB. I placed 2nd in my age group at Pumpkinman Triathlon! Thanks again!
I walked into Dr. Kelly’s office 8 months ago barely able to turn my neck and in extreme pain after suffering multiple injuries from a head on collision. I am now running, doing yoga, and looking forward to living my life again. I will forever be indebted to Dr. Kelly. More than any other doctor I have ever been to, Dr. Kelly truly considers the entire patient; she does not treat just the pain, but the whole person. She went above and beyond to communicate and coordinate with my other health care providers to ensure that I was getting the best care possible. She is a caring individual, an extremely knowledgeable doctor, and she is passionate about her work and the health of her patients.
I meant to shoot you an email yesterday to thank you. As I am sure you are aware (and noticed), in Jiu Jitsu people always banged up. It comes with the territory. Frankly, I didn’t realize how much pain I have been in for the past few weeks until you alleviated it. I am virtually pain free today. My shoulder and neck feel 1000% (yes, one thousand) percent better. And I know why. Because you understand the interrelation of soft tissue, neurological and skeletal trauma and wear and tear. You practice from that perspective. It showed it your examination, evaluation and the treatment modalities you chose to utilize. Thank you so much.
While training for the Falmouth Road Race in May, I injured by Achilles tendon. My primary care physician diagnosed a partial tear and referred me to an orthopedic specialist who recommended that I stop running for awhile and then try some fast walking. At age 57, I don’t have the luxury of skipping events with the expectation that next year will be more convenient. I consulted the coach from last year’s team who referred me to Dr. Kate Kelly with the assurance that she could have me ready for the race now less than three months away. I was skeptical. Dr. Kelly used a variety of techniques including ART and Kinesio tape, but more importantly, was consistent in her belief that I would be able to participate. I was filled with anxiety: my husband said that she actually was my therapist and he didn’t mean physical! The day of the face arrived and I finished without pain that day or the next. Dr. Kelly is fantastic – I could not have done this without her.
Dr Kelly is the absolute best. She has made noticeable improvements to my back pains and to the pinched nerve in my left arm. She has been treating my problem, not only the symptoms. I just completed a round trip 900 mile drive from Boston, MA to Buffalo, NY. The drive use to be a sure way to aggravate my back and pinched nerve but since I’ve been seeing Dr. Kelly I can actually enjoy my time with friends and family while in NY. I’m actually looking forward to the long drive again to attend my sister’s wedding.
